ESTIMATES OF THE RELATIVE PERCENTAGE OF FIBERS, RESIN AND VOIDS IN COMPOSITE LAMINATES

Estimates of the relative percentage of fiber and resin

The technique adopted by Q.I. Composites is based on combustion of the resin matrix of the sample. Comparing sample weight prior to and after the experiment, we are able to estimate the relative weight percentage of fiber and resin. This information can be readily converted into volume percent of each component, since their density is known.

Estimate of void percentage

The void percentage per unit volume is calculated based on the speed of ultrasounds in the sample, provided that the percentage of resin with respect to fiber is known.
